‘Mavu’ means mango trees, for the ones that filled our gardens. The cool shade over our terrace was a canopy of tall mango trees, filtering in the harsh afternoon sun into dreamy rays. After laying out sheets of homemade papads to dry, we would go sit in the shade, chewing on the sticky few that dried first. The small, unspoken moments of connection brought us closer together, right up until I wiped my hands on my grandmother’s saree! This saree reminds me of her soft sarees, washed a million times over decades. It is made in a cotton-mul mix fabric, with black hand-made tassels at the end. Paired with our Tulsi blouse for an earthy look. The fabric is sourced from artisans in Tamil Nadu and hand-dyed in Mumbai.
